A Tribute to Sir Ian Holm

I watched the movies, “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy when I was a teen, and “The Hobbit” trilogy when I was an adult. I was fascinated by the story, the plot, the settings and everything. I became attached to the characters; their adventures and their wisdoms.

I admire Peter Jackson’s courage and perseverance, the production team’s creativity and vigor, the actors and actresses’ talent and commitment to make these wonderful movies come to life.

This news saddened me, and I guess, them the most.

As little as I could do, I collected some of my most favorite lines in relation to his character as “Old Bilbo”, as a way to say thank you for giving life to the “Hobbit who found the one ring..”

****

“It began long ago, in a land far away to the east, in the like of which you will not find in the world today.”

The Hobbit

Truly, there’s a beginning and an end — that what’s in the world today, might not be in the world tomorrow..

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

The Lord of the Rings

It was a dangerous business, a dangerous road, but it seems you overcame it and did quite well.

“I meant to go back.. wonder at the power of Mirkwood, visit Lake-town, see the Lonely Mountain again. But age, it seems, has finally caught up with me.”

The Lord of the Rings

Age may have finally caught up, but you set it aside and portrayed as “Old Bilbo”, one last time.

“Gandalf, my old friend, this is a night to remember.”

The Lord of the Rings

It was, indeed, a journey worth remembering.

“I’ve thought up an ending for my book: And he lived happily ever after to the end of his days.”

The Lord of the Rings

I hope you achieved what your heart desired.

“But where our hearts truly lie.. is in peace and quiet.. and good tilled earth.”

The Lord of the Rings

I wish you had that peace and quiet in this good tilled earth..

“I regret to announce that this is the end. I’m going now. I bid you all a very fond farewell. Goodbye.”

The Lord of the Rings

You did need to bid a farewell, but must have no regret as you left us a legacy to remember.

“I think I’m quite ready for another adventure.”

The Lord of the Rings

And thank you for sharing your adventure with us.

Farewell, Sir Ian.
